Description of coat of arms: In a golden (=yellow) shield is a black, rampant lion armed and tongued red and holding a blue arrow in his right back paw.
Meaning: According to source Nideggen gained city rights in 1313 from count Gerhard I of Jülich. The oldest seal shows the arms of the counts of Jüülich hanging on a hook. The present combination of the lion of Jülich and the arrow dates from the 16th century. Inbetween there had been arms showing the lion in a green field without arrow. The arrow, the local distinguishing mark was added again in 1961 and then also the old tinctures were reestablished.
