Obrovac is located at the confluence of Zrmanja river into the Adriatic Sea, at the nothern border of traditional Dalmatia, just south of the high slopes of southern end of the Velebit mountain range. Population is just under 3,400 inhabitants, some 1,000 in the town itself, although the neighbouring village of Kruševo is larger by population counting almost 1,100. Obrovac was granted the Town status in 1997.
During the 20th century, until the 1990s somewhat over 60% of the population were Serbs, but today they represent only some 13%. While the town was mostly Serb populated, Kruševo and a few other villages were Croat populated.

The symbols of Obrovac are described in the Town Statutes, adopted in 2009.
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.
The flag is in proportions 1:2, "indigo blue" with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

Coat of arms of Obrovac - Image by Željko Heimer, 31 August 2009
The coat of arms is "Gules a goat rampant argent next to a hornbeam eradicated vert fructed or".
The hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is native to the region. Goats were traditionally herded in the region of sparse vegetation among which the hornbeam is noticeable.
