About the flag

It is fairily typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on white and purple quarterly (town rank) background. Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República : II Série in 1960.12.29, a remarkably late date.

The arms are Gules on a three-arch bridge Argent masoned Sable issuant from a campaign wavy wavy Azure and Argent a castle Argent masoned Sable open and litten Gules charged in its main tower with an escutcheon Azure five plates Argent between two bunches of grapes Purpure leaved Or and in chief dexter a moon Argent and in chief sinister a sun Or. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "Valença".

Presentation of Valença

Valença (a.k.a. Valença do Minho)municipality had 14 187 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 16 communes covering 117,43 km². It is part of Viana do Castelo District, traditional province Minho, 1999 ref. adm. region Entre Douro e Minho, C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte, and NUTS III Minho-Lima.
