Presentation of the municipality

Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue is a city of c. 2,500 inhabitants, located on the east coast of Cotentin.

On 2-5 June 1692, following an aborted attempt of landing in Britain, the French fleet commanded by Admiral de Tourville was attacked by an Anglo-Dutch armada. Most ships could flee to Saint-Malo, but following an erroneous nautical manoeuvre, 13 French ships were carried away by the tidal stream near La Hougue, where they were burned.

Burgee of the restaurant Le Chasse-Marée

The restaurant called Le Chasse-Marée (literally, something like "the fresh fish catcher"), after the name of a traditional Breton three-mast fishing boat is located on the fishing port of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue.

If you are a serious vexillologist, you must have dinner in Le Chasse-Marée. The two small rooms of the restaurant are decorated with dozens of yacht club burgees. All of them have apparently "sailed" and were most probably offered by happy customers.

Moreover, the restaurant has its own burgee, which is reproduced on the tablecloths and plates, and also hung on the wall of the entrance room. The burgee is white with an horizontal dark blue stripe shifted to the bottom of the flag, interlaced CM (for Chasse-Marée) letters in dark blue in canton and a dark blue star above the blue stripe.

If you are a serious gastronome, you have another reason to have dinner in Le Chasse-Marée. The food is extremely refined, and not unsurprisingly based on fresh fish and sea food coming from the port.

This restaurant is mentioned in the Guide Vert Michelin Normandie-Cotentin, where its original decoration is highlighted.
