The department is named after the river Var (120 km). when the department of Alpes-Maritimes was created in 1860, arrondissement of Grasse, then in Var, was rattached to Alpes-Maritimes. This is the reason why the river Var does not flow in the department of Var.
The General Council also uses the modern banner of arms of Provence.
