Bois de la Chaize is a forest extending over 60 ha on the island of Noirmoutier. The forest is famous for its pinetrees, ilex, and mimosas, which are rather rare on the Atlantic coast.
Noirmoutier Island, reputed for potato growing, is separated from mainland by a narrow strait locally called the Gois. Until 1971 when a bridge was built, the island could be reached only at low tide by a submersible road. The road is 'decorated' with towers on which people who took the road a bit too late could climb and wait for the next low tide. The Tour de France took that slippery road a few years ago, with, as could have been expected, a general fall off of the bikers.
The Cercle Voile du Bois de la Chaize has a white burgee with initials C (big, in red), V B C (small, in black)
