Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 30.589; area: 58,00 km². Settlements: Meppel (seat), Broekhuizen, De Kolk (part), Havelterberg (part), Havixhorst, Kolderveen, Kolderveense Bovenboer, Lindenhorst, Nijentap, Nijeveen, Nijeveense Bovenboer, Rogat, Schiphorst.
Meppel in southwest Drenthe used to have the best coffee along the Amsterdam-Groningen railroad. The municipality consists of the former municipalities of Meppel and Nijeveen.

Apparently the new flag of Meppel was adopted 2 Jan 1998, combining elements of the flags of the old municipalities of Meppel and Nijeveen.

This is the old flag of Meppel. The cloverleaf stands for the meadows in the vicinity and the blocks are 'turven' (blocks of peat), which were exploited here in not too distant times.

The old, unofficial flag of Meppel was green over white; green for clover-leaves and white for the silver municipal shield.
