The black cross reminds of the old monastery, after which the village was named - it was the "Olijfberg", the "monastery in the marsh" (feen clooster) of the Norbertine nuns of Oudwoude, founded before 1287 from Dokkum, relinquished 1579.
Nickname: Hegereiners - people who circulated in the highest circles.

The swan is from the arms of the Fogelsangh family, who lived here and after which "Fogelsanghstate" was named, a manor which is still dominating the village.
