Shipmate Flagchart : http://www.shipmate.nl/flags.htm
adopted 2 Jan 1991; design: Drs. J.F. van Heijningen.
The old flag was adopted 16 Dec 1975; design: Kl Sierksma; description: a blue hoist charged with a yellow lion rampant and a fly of three horizontal stripes waved at least twice, yellow-blue-yellow, proportioned 8:5:8; the yellow stripes each with a semée of an indefinite number of trees in blue contourlines.
The lion is for Holland (Haarlem is the capital of Noord-Holland); the wavy stripe is foor "Liede" = water. The trees are canting for "Spaarnwoude", and is also designed to attract visitors to the recreational development area. <which it did: hippies!>
However it was discovered that the lion was garbled as the family-CoA of Spaarnwoude. As a result the municipality received on 10 Apr 1986 a new CoA: blue with a semée of silver blocks and charged with a lion rampant armed red, surmontée a yellow crown of three leaves and two pearls.
The new flag has the silver lion of Spaarnwoude; the blue wavy stripe represents (Haarlemmer) Liede. The trees have been omitted.

note: Spaarnwoude is named after the river Spaarne, and apparently has nothing to do with the tree the Dutch name "spar" (spruce-)fir.

Semee of trees in outline--most interesting and unusual, adopted on my (and Beethoven's) birthday, too... ;-).
